As perfumers, it’s important to take a stand when the environmental impact of an ingredient becomes too great, which is why I choose to not use Indian sandalwood in my creations. Unfortunately, the growing demand for sandalwood has led to extensive deforestation in India. Illegal logging practices and the slow growth rate of sandalwood trees have taken a toll on these precious resources, causing concerns about biodiversity loss and environmental damage.
In the face of these challenges, the perfume industry has been making remarkable progress towards sustainability by embracing innovative alternatives. Enter Dreamwood base, a solution that merges advanced biotechnology and synthetic biology to create a sustainable and renewable source of sandalwood fragrance – and it's the secret behind Ara's sandalwood note!
Dreamwood base is crafted through the cultivation of a unique strain of yeast using fermentation technology. This remarkable yeast produces the same aromatic compounds found in natural sandalwood, offering an environmentally friendly and cruelty-free alternative.
