THE MYTH

Pygmalion.

In Ovid's Metamorphoses, a sculptor of Cyprus turns from the world and carves the figure he cannot find. Ivory shaped so finely it seems alive. He falls in love with what his own hands have made.

He dresses it. Speaks to it. Sleeps beside it.

At the festival of Aphrodite he prays — too quietly to name what he truly wants — for a love like the one he has made.

He returns home. Kisses the cold mouth. The ivory warms. The figure opens its eyes. Its skin, milk-warm.

The wish was answered as it was asked.

THE STORY

By candlelight, by patience, by a love that has no name, Pygmalion shapes marble into being. The body lacks only breath. The body lacks only time. A form made of stone and devotion both.

A wish too quiet to say aloud.

Stone warms. Silence breaks. Cold becomes skin. Stillness becomes gaze. The beloved opens their eyes, no longer carved, no longer kept.

They wake milk-warm, softened by the first breath of life.

The scent of a body, just made.
